California gamblers who want to play online casino games currently find themselves in the same position as most of the rest of the United States. One bill was strictly designed to legalize only online poker, and would allow a coalition of card rooms and local Native American tribal groups to operate those rooms. Another bill offered the potential for wider online gambling, including the potential expansion to casino games, and would allow companies from outside of California to bid on the rights to host these sites.
Neither one of these bills has come anywhere near passage yet, but there is at least some support for both, so it would be wrong to consider either piece of legislation to be dead. However, it’s also possible that California may be waiting to see what the federal government does first, as there is currently a bill with significant support floating around the House of Representatives that would establish a federally-regulated online poker network in the United States.
One way or the other, it seems likely that Californians may soon have some more options for playing their favorite casino games. In a strange twist, California may be one of the few places where online casino sites offer games that feel more authentic, in some cases, than those in brick-and-mortar casinos! Because of some unusual state gaming laws, craps and roulette games need to use cards (or a combination of cards and dice) to produce results, making the games feel very different than the normal versions you’d see in most casinos. Blackjack, too, is often played with atypical rules in California.
